Legend suggests that the Church of St Joseph in Nazareth stands on the site of the carpentry workshop of Mary’s husband. Also known as the Church of the Nutrition and Joseph’s Workshop, it is a modest structure overshadowed by the grandeur of the nearby Church of the Annunciation. However, there is no concrete evidence linking the cave beneath the church to Joseph’s trade. The Gospels refer to Joseph as a tekton, likely implying he worked with both stone and wood, perhaps at the nearby city of Sepphoris, where he may have found employment during the construction boom led by Herod Antipas.
