Church of Pater Noster

The Church of Pater Noster, situated on the Mount of Olives, commemorates Jesus’ instruction of the Lord’s Prayer to his disciples. Adorning the church and its vaulted cloister are colorful ceramic plaques bearing translations of the prayer in 140 languages. A gift shop offers postcards featuring each plaque, while the Convent of Pater Noster website provides translations in over 1440 languages and dialects. According to tradition, Jesus taught the Lord’s Prayer in the grotto beneath the church, leading Crusaders to name it Pater Noster, meaning Our Father in Latin. Early pilgrims claimed to have seen the prayer inscribed in Hebrew and Greek on marble plaques, with excavations revealing a Latin version.
